Economic Depression that is…
Dow Drops 777 points
Dow Drops 777 points on Monday
Stocks tumbled Monday as the damage brought on by out of control markets, bubbles, poor regulation, corruption, over-speculation and greed finally take their toll on the New York stock market as well as global markets, bringing on fears of a coming global “depression era” like we have never seen. The bailout program currently under consideration may or may not help matters. If it does help, it may be only temporary and usher in more problems down the road. The best bet right now is to hold on tight, grab your favorite cocktail and relax because there’s not much we can do about the mess we’ve made for ourselves. It’s time we ask our government, are you smarter than a fifth grader? The answer is clearly a resounding NO!

On the bright side, with the housing bubble burst, building materials are at an all time low. Now is the time to convert that dark depressing corner of you basement or living room into a lively room where you can kick back and laugh it off while watching the Daily Show or Glenn Beck (wait, he might be too depressing becuase he really tells it like it is!). It may be a long winter ahead, but you can shorten it up considerable by building your own home bar using our easy do it yourself project plans and by sharing ideas and photos in our builder’s forum community and photo gallery, all included with your low priced lifetime membership.
Cheers! We could be in for a looong ride!

The Three Packer Stooges? In remains to be seen.

The Three Packer Stooges? In remains to be seen.

Waffling aside, if your MVP Quarterback wants to return after getting you one play from the Super Bowl, do you:
A: Welcome him back?
B: Make Lame Excuses to Not Welcome him Back?
C: Try to Pay him $20 million to stay retired?
D: Trade him to another Team?
E: None of the Above.

The current Green Bay Packer management has choosen B, C and now appears to be trying option D. This situation is WAY out of control. The general feeling among everyone that we have spoken to is the they have ALL lost any respect for these three clowns, and when that happens in Green Bay, you might as well GO PACK, your bags! If egos could have been left on the sideline, Brett Favre would be back on the team and all would be well with the world. This fiasco seems to have sent ripples of disruption throughout the entire NFL and even the world. The pieces are all over the floor and the public is going to want to know EXACTLY who caused this mess and why. I doubt the lame excuses we have heard so far will stand up in the court of public opinion. These three stooges need to remember who owns that team! If Roger’s lays an egg on Monday Night Football next week, heads will roll! For more discussion, see the Packer Forum.

UPDATE:
A change of heart has occurred between the time Favre left Green Bay and up until about 10 minutes ago. I have been learned that Favre has AGAIN waffled his way past training camp with the Vikings and is on his plane at this moment in a rumored attempt to sign with the “Queens”.  I would hope Brad Childress is smart enough to turn him down, but I doubt it.
IMHO, the Packer’s defensive line should place a bounty on Favre’s head to retire him once and for all, kind of like the late Charles Martin and his hit list on Da Bears Jim McMahon in the 86 season.
I am hearing already of Favre jersey & memorabilia burning parties right before the October 5th and November 1st games. I have lost all respect for Brett Favre.

UPDATE: October 6th 2009
Favre gets his revenge against Ted Thompson, so maybe old Teds decision was bad to begin with. There HAS to be more to this story than meets the eye. It looks like Favre was driven out of Green Bay, probably because he wanted too much of a hand in making managerial decisions, which Teds tiny ego could not handle.

Just a few short years ago, it was nothing to dump ten bucks in the gas tank and drive five hours for a two night vacation in the northwoods. Today that trip, financially speaking, is no longer a great idea. The trip burns about 20 gallons of gas for the round trip and today that will run over $78.20 (and rising) leaving much less cash for food and entertainment.
Unless you have a large stash of disposable income, vacationing away from home is fast becoming less practical for many families. So what’s the solution?
Take a Staycation! Staycatioing is fast becoming the “green” way to save green while investing your money into home improvements. Stay at home and invest the money you’d normally spend on a vacation into an unused space in your home; like a basement home theater or for summer months your backyard. Sure many people feel trapped by their daily grind and just have to get away for a vacation, but what if everything you ran 100 miles away to enjoy was right in your own backyard?
Taking a staycation has many advantages:

  • No long “are we there yet?” drive.
  • No speeding tickets.
  • No traffic hassles.
  • Clean facilities nearby.
  • No crowds.
  • Quick escape when weather turns ugly.

Taking just one staycation per year can not only save money, but also helps the overall gas problem. With the number of people out there today, we all need to start doing our part.

relaxing gazeebo tentOnce we got to our vacaton destination, the things we enjoyed the most were simply sitting under the tent and next to the fire, so rather than spend hundreds of dollars each year on the long trek to increasingly congested campgrounds and resorts, we decide to bring the best of the resorts to our back yard. Now we have our own relaxing gazeebo, jacuzzi and fire pit right in our backyard.

Money spent on a vacation is gone the day your vacation ends, but money spent on items you can continue to use keeps providing fun and enjoyment year after year.
Backyard hot tubWe decided a few years ago to start using the money we normally put aside for vacationing for improving our back yard. We first erected a fence, which for our rather large back yard was equal to a winter Mexico vacation we had planned to take. The next year we again stayed home and installed a Jacuzzi hot tub. Now we can feel like we’re in Mexico every day of the year!

This year we are continuing our staycation tradition adding more trees and a 12′x24′ garden garage with an attached 10′x12′ greenhouse. The greenhouse will help us offset the rising price of fruits & vegetables, allowing us to become less dependent of store bought produce.

This year, try taking a staycation, you’ll find it more relaxing than an expensive trip!
Tell us about your staycation experiences.
