| Drunk driving is a serious social problem that affects many lives and in some cases, ends the lives of innocent men, women and children, resulting from a series of bad decisions made by irresponsible drinkers. Fortunately the problem can be avoided, unfortunately the choice to drink and drive is one freedom that we alone are left to control.
Alcohol is a drug that impairs your ability to think and react quickly resulting in poor judgment and coordination for anyone behind the wheel of a car. Blood alcohol concentrations of just .08 will impair your ability to drive any vehicle, endangering the driver and innocent people on the road. Laws are in place to limit drunk driving, but clearly these laws are not enough. Individuals need to be aware of the problem and make the right choices. | In our opinion, the problem lies in two areas that are lacking, education and public service ads. It's obvious that education alone is not the answer, since so many people already know the cause, effect and consequences of drunk driving.
Back in the mid 80's, my drivers education class included a series of movies taken at the scene of an accident or in the hospital showing critically injured victims. With today's political correctness, and fears of scaring our poor youth, this is no longer done. That's too bad, because those images still remind me not to Drink & Drive.
We need more realistic public service ads like the one shown at right and less fantasy car ads showing drivers doing crazy maneuvers, which drunks seem to want to replicate when they get behind the wheel intoxicated. |

How? By entertaining at home. Proper planning eliminates the need to drive. If friends are involved, offer them a place to sleep off their fun and get the keys of anyone who has had too much to drink.
