I just finished building the bar, the only difference is I cut mine to a 6 foot bar instead of 8 feet. I am to the point of finishing the bar and would like suggestions. I think I want to bar to be black. You think the best way to handle is just to paint it? Is there such a thing is a black stain? Secondly, what is the best way to do the top? I was thinking about cutting glass to sit on top. Also considering a laminate top. What do you think? What has worked for you?
Thanks,

Think about a polyurethane etc… If you like the grain pattern use a semi transparent stain but, since you were thinking of paiting you probably want to cover it right up ?
I will send you a e-mail attaching pictures of my bar and top if you would like to see it. Let me know if you would ?December 14, 2004 at 9:05 pm #19555AnonymousInactiveI would love to see pictures of your bar. I will look for the black stain at lowes/home depot. How many coats of poly would you do? I am assuming more on the top, then the rest. Will it protect from spills, etc?
December 15, 2004 at 2:39 pm #19556brimichmMemberMy bar top is actually ceramic tiles. I used two part apoxy to cover tiles to give the top a smoothe , glass like finish. It is probably 1/4″ thick. Some refer to it as “pour-on” I believe it is advertised now on this site. Look in the finishing ideas etc.. It’s expensive, I paid here in Canada $130 for a 1 Gal kit. Had to order from a paint store, Home Depot did not carry it.
If you use urethane etc.. make sure it’s UV resistant and resist yellowing over time. I used a water based type for easy cleaning and fast drying. I forget what name but think it was “Urethane ” brand ? I also used a gel type stain, a lot easier to use no mess at all. It was also the same brand.December 15, 2004 at 2:52 pm #19557brimichmMemberSorry Chvaka, I can’t send you a private message. Site sais I’m only a guest and not registered.
