House Porn:
Recently there’s been a shake up in search results. Searches for real plans and designs bring up sites with obscene numbers of photos from over the top extravagant homes. Most featured homes are so expensive that they sit vacant. These results seem more interested in pushing ads you way than finding real plans. These ad driven sites have created what we now call “house porn”.
Pictures of Obnoxiously Extravagant Home Bars:
“House Porn” refers to extravagant or over the top homes or rooms, bars and man caves inside said extravagant homes. In most cases, the intent of the photos is to inspire designers or prospective, upscale home buyers with unique ideas.
The problem is, most of these porned-out-palaces are beyond the budget and skill of the average do-it-yourselfer. Nice ideas, but hardly fitting the home bar construction niche, since the majority of photos viewed have nothing to do with actually building home bars.
Inspiration or Frustration:
While these sites are fine and perhaps an inspiration for designers, the sites are just eye candy link bait.
Builder’s looking for real plans with material cut lists and illustrated assembly diagrams will be disappointed. For those builder’s, Barplan.com delivers all the goods without the porn.
In the end, entertaining perhaps, but not very useful information for the true do it yourself project builder on a budget and needing detailed “how to” instructions.

Be warned, while house porn may inspire, if your pockets aren’t deep enough, it might just give you a bad case of home envy.
