I think we’ve decided to go with granite tiles for our bar top. It’s not quite as unique as I would have liked, but since we’ll probably move in 5 – 7 years we thought we’d go with something that was resale friendly.

Anyway, I’m trying to decide if 3/4 plywood + backerboard would be enough of a underlay for the top or if I need to add another layer for more stability. Any advice would be great… thanks!

Why not just add some 2″x4″ braces under the bar top securely fastened to the frame. I would think that would take any flex out of the plywood. My bar is covered in tile and the grout has not cracked.

Your 3/4″ ply and tile backer will be quite sufficient. As your bar width will be around 2 feet, it will provide a solid base without flex.

When I tiled my kitchen cabinets, I used 3/4″ OSB with 1/4″ backer and the surface is very solid.

If I might recommend using epoxy grout, I think you will be satisfied. It does not get as dirty as regular grout and it creates a great water barrier. My bar back has Italian tiles with white epoxy grout, and I have not had a problem with it yet.

          Good Luck,
