Out of the ordinary bartop

I have found a source for custom cut raw lumber and I am considering using a 3 inch thick, 18 inch wide, 12 foot long, slice of a pine tree trunk. I would leave the bark on the outside edge and cut the ends and inside edges straight. The entire top and the bark would then be covered with envirotek or polyurethane. I originally wanted to use a hardwood such as Oak, Maple, Walnut etc. but everyone tells me that that thick a piece of hardwood would take 3 years to dry out (if it ever did). My question is: Has anyone reading this forum ever done anything similar, and if so what was the outcome and what were the problems (if any)?
Any info will be appreciated. :) [/b]

I’m considering the same thing. I found a local place which has natural edge pine logs which are about 3″ thick and 20-25″ deep. They kiln dry them for 2 months and I think that would work. My only concern would be keeping the natural bark on the board. I don’t think it will last long no matter what I do. I really want a unique bar top, not just plain plywood. I’m also considering using granite or marble.
